Tips for Dating in Today's Information Age

Are you lonely? Maybe you have done it before at the bar scene. Maybe you've tried to meet that special someone on your own and just haven't had any luck. Don't get discouraged -- just because you've had trouble finding dates doesn't mean that all hope is lost. One of the most promising ways to meet new people is through online dating. Once upon a time, those seeking matchmaking services had to deal with time-consuming newspaper personal ads or visit a professional matchmaking service in person. Today, however, it's easier and faster than ever to access a veritable catalog of potential mates thanks to the Internet!

Most of the online matchmaking sites work in the same way. There are lots of them out there, including Match.com which is endorsed and advertised by well-known therapist and television personality Dr. Phil McGraw. Whether this site or perhaps another one is right for you will depend on your individual needs and preferences. The good news for new online daters is that many sites offer free trials and services that will allow you to explore the site without making a financial commitment. If you decide you want to continue looking for a date on the site, you can of course sign up for a paid membership. There are even free matchmaking sites out there.

The first thing you'll do is either create your profile or browse for listings. When creating a profile, it's very important to answer all questions honestly. Be specific about yourself and what you are looking for in a potential date. Depending on the site you use, you may be asked a variety of questions about your appearance, personality, personal values, likes, and dislikes. The more information you provide, the more likely you are to find a good match. Another part of any good profile is a photo. Choose a favorite photo of yourself that you are comfortable showing others. This may be a professional photograph or simply a candid snapshot. The most important thing is that your photo is a clear and accurate representation of what you look like.

When browsing for listings on Internet dating sites, you can enter the criteria you are looking for. Examples include age range and location. Some sites offer more detailed criteria so you can get more targeted matches. Once you submit your search criteria, you will be presented with a list of profiles that match what you are looking for. All that's left to do is go through the profiles and choose the individuals you want to contact. Most sites have a safe and anonymous method members can use to contact other members. Whether or not you provide your real name and email address to someone you've contacted is a personal decision that should be carefully considered before a decision is made. Looking for dates online can be fun, convenient and effective -- just be sure to use common sense and stay safe!
